Make PC Version

Lots of players have to run on a Mac emulator now. (Status 4/2/03 -- considering player-written PC client project)

Joe also posted in the newsgroup that once there is a PC-Client there is

zero need for 68k anylonger. So, we get rid of the old code and a lot of

folks would be happy.

The PC client would not require to have all features at once. The one Alchera

used was not very advanced. It crashed occasionally, had no sound, no macros,

no shadows/night effect... but still it worked well enough for hundreds of

players.

I am a Mac Fanatic, yet I feel this would be a very smart move. I was unable to play for 8 months as I was deployed overseas. When I returned I discovered the numbers to have serious slacked off. During any given time period, the number of people clanning was almost half what it had been 8 months ago. (GMs, care to actually post numbers compairing last year and this?) We need a new player base or this game may go by the wayside! If that means PC users, bring them on!

As one of the Basilisk (PC Emulation) enabled CL users, I'd naturally be all in favor of a PC Client. Nice as Basilisk is, it is also inefficient. CL frame skips are a common byproduct of emulating.

I'm curious - whatever happened to Maz's PC Client? Could it still be picked up? Same for the Alchera version? Could it be picked up too?

As much as I like the idea of supporting our Mac-challenged friends, I think the real benefit of a PC client would be the addition of new bodies, and hopefully, ideas, to the game.

The current number of players is getting dangerously close to the "it's not fun to play 'cause I can't get a good group together" stage. With the addition of a PC client, and the agressive pricing point ($6.66/mo  for the year contract), we should see a large influx of players.

The only downside I see is that the influx will be PC users...

I think the PC players are not that bad. Sure there are way more snerts

with them, but they have a much larger number to start with.

Plus most "interferingly" folks would most likely seek out a game which

is 1) free and 2) "is cooler".

There are only very few hard-core PC gamers which will give CL

attention. The graphics are not 3D, the sound not 6 channels - so why

bother? "I got a 3 GHz machine with 1 GB RAM and Radeons 9700,

so I play only stuff to put these to use!".

However, the folks which came from Alchera and people which look

beyond the shell will eventually join. And this is a good thing.

Plus - the demo REALLY needs to be reworked.

Or build some preselected movies inside a demo package which will

only require a doubleclick and where the movies are commented

somehow. <- this belongs to another topic 8)

I'd be willing to allow a Windows version if we promise not to tell anybody about it (so just those poor souls currently forced to use emulators can play).

PC version = bigger player base = more $$ for DT to work with = a bigger, better CL for everyone.

A Linux version may be a better idea than a Windoze version. The Linux community is a smaller group than the Windoze folk, may be able to weed out some of the snertish kids who's parents got em a brand new gamin PC for their 13th b'day.

Any snertish PC kid who looks at clanlord would immediately turn to diablo, or EQ, or whatever. The graphics are way too basic for (most anyway) the "snerty kids" as you labeled them.

Also, as soon as they got wind that they couldn't be l33t in like 2 days they'd definetly look at something else.

I also think it would be a good idea. The times where 180 exiles walking around are gone, as well as all of the different personalities and styles of being.

I'd hate for Puddleby to disappear by the wayside.

Puddleby needs new blood. Even dirty, tainted Windoze blood.

In fact, I feel this is so important, I'm going to bump it just as a reminder...

I think bumping threads every so often is ok so long as there is either a real discussion going on or it is attracting many votes. The point of this place is to make it easy for the developers to see our feedback.
